Hurricane Katrina Interrupts New Orleans Tourism
ST. LOUIS, MO (SLFP.com), September 2, 2005 - Marriott International, Inc. and the Marriott family's private foundation, The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, have pledged a total of $3 million to aid employees and victims of Hurricane Katrina.
"Hurricane Katrina has caused heartbreaking loss for the people of the Gulf Coast region, including our associates, their families and their communities," said J.W. "Bill" Marriott, Jr., chairman and CEO, Marriott International, Inc. "Our company and the Marriott family extend our deepest sympathy and concern to all those affected by this tragedy."
The company has contributed $500,000 to the American Red Cross to help all in the affected communities and has also established the Marriott & Ritz- Carlton Disaster Relief Fund under the auspices of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, a charitable organization, and made an initial $500,000 donation. This newly-established fund allows the company, associates, owners, franchisees, business partners, customers and others to financially assist Marriott & Ritz-Carlton managed and franchised associates affected by significant disasters in communities where we live and work.
The company has established a toll-free line for friends and families to call for information about guests and associates who may have been affected by the hurricane. That number is (866) 211-4610. (Outside the U.S. and Canada, the direct dial number is 402-390-3265.)
As of 2 p.m. (EDT) Wednesday, August 31, Marriott's 15 hotels in New Orleans have marginal operations and are unable to accept reservations.
Strategic Hotel Capital has assembled a team of professional consultants, Hyatt's engineering team, and an internal task force to conduct a complete damage assessment and plan appropriate action on the Hyatt Regency New Orleans.
Everyone was safely evacuated from rooms prior to the storm and some are still being sheltered at the property. There have been no casualties reported at the hotel. Approximately 580 of the room windows, in addition to eight atrium windows were damaged by the hurricane winds and flying debris, with some resultant water damage. At this time there is no flooding.
The hotel is being powered by emergency generators and has ample fuel reserves for the immediate future. Although closed, the property is currently accommodating approximately 1,000 people, including some guests, a 70-person FEMA team, the mayor's office, Entergy Corporation, the Office of Emergency Preparedness, as well as 165 of the Hyatt staff and their families. The company and Hyatt arranged for a convoy of provisions, which arrived at the hotel early this morning, and further relief supplies and executive personnel are in route.
Commenting on the situation, Laurence Geller, CEO of Strategic Hotel Capital stated, "We thank Michael Smith, the general manager of the Hyatt Regency New Orleans, who along with his management team and hotel staff executed the contingency plan in an exemplary manner. Our internal crisis task force is working continuously with the on-site team as well as Hyatt's corporate and regional offices to utilize all available resources in ensuring that our guests, staff and families who remained housed at the property are comfortable under these arduous conditions.
"We extend our sympathy to those who have suffered losses during this natural disaster. We are grateful for the support from the mayor and chief of police. Obviously concerned with the impact of this on the city's infrastructure, we are not only focused on reinstating our hotel into service as soon as possible, but are also committed to work with the mayor, governor and visitor and convention bureau to rebuild this great city and its tourism base."
Hilton Hotels Corporation continues to monitor the status of Hilton, Doubletree, Embassy Suites Hotels, Hampton, Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites by Hilton hotels in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Guests with reservations whose travel plans have been disrupted directly by the storm, or who are planning to travel to nearby areas where evacuees are being relocated, are encouraged to contact Hilton Family toll-free reservations at 1-800-HILTONS to determine hotel availability. Cancellation fees for transient business at hotels directly affected by the storm (New Orleans area and the Gulf Coast of Mississippi) are being waived for arrivals through November 30, 2005.
The Hilton Family of Hotels also is waiving group cancellation damages for meetings through November 30, 2005 at hotels in the New Orleans area and Gulf Coast of Mississippi. The company has established a Hurricane Group Bookings Hotline for inquiries: 1-866-973-8030.
No major guest or team member injuries have been reported at the Hilton Family of Hotels. Most hotels have reported water leaks, broken windows and minor stucco damage in various areas. Some hotels will be closed longer-term due to cleanup efforts and water damage, particularly in New Orleans.
La Quinta Corporation continues to work with local authorities to monitor the status of its hotels affected by Hurricane Katrina and provide for its guests and employees as best as conditions allow.
As of 5:00 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, August 31, eight company- owned hotels in the greater New Orleans area are closed and will be unable to accept reservations until further notice.
None of the Company's franchised locations in the area are currently closed. However, some of the Company's franchise units under construction in the Florida and Gulf Coast regions were impacted, which may affect those properties' scheduled opening dates.
For families of guests trying to locate current and evacuated guests, please call La Quinta's Hurricane Emergency Assistance number at 1-866-328-1759 and we will try to assist in locating missing persons.
