Wyndham Announces Sale of the Mayfair to the Roberts Companies
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), July 27, 2003 - Wyndham International, Inc. has sold the 182-room Mayfair - A Wyndham Historic Hotel located in St. Louis, to Roberts Mayfair Hotel, LLC. The Mayfair will remain in the Wyndham-branded portfolio through a 10-year management agreement with the new owners. The sale to Roberts Mayfair Hotel, LLC, a partnership led by St. Louis businessmen Michael V. Roberts and Steven C. Roberts, marks Wyndham's first minority owner partnership.
"We have committed ourselves to creating a diverse workforce as well as creating programs that speak directly to our multi-cultural customers," stated Fred J. Kleisner, chairman and chief executive officer for Wyndham.
"Wyndham's diversity initiative follows the company's history of developing programs that directly respond to guests' needs, as well as acknowledging the ever-changing traveler marketplace. We have been looking for a development partner to further extend this initiative and we hope to build on this relationship to cultivate future minority development partnerships."
"We selected Wyndham as our management partner because of the high quality and customer satisfaction associated with the Wyndham brand," said Michael V. Roberts, chairman and chief executive officer of Roberts Mayfair Hotel, LLC. "Working together, we hope to restore this St. Louis treasure into a premier boutique hotel offering the best service and amenities available."
Nestled in downtown St. Louis, the Mayfair is just steps away from the America's Center and Edward Jones Dome. More than 5,000 square feet of function space includes five flexible meeting rooms and can accommodate groups of up to 150 people. Hotel features include a heated rooftop pool, fully equipped fitness center and the Mayfair Grill, serving a full-service menu for lunch and dinner.
The Mayfair Hotel first opened its doors in 1925, and over the past 78 years has attracted guests such as John Barrymore, Irving Berlin, Cary Grant and Presidents Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson. During the first few years of its existence, the hotel also served as the home of KMOX radio. In 1961, the Mayfair unveiled the first "roof-top" swimming pool, and is also loosely credited for starting the chocolates at turndown trend.
Founded by Michael V. Roberts and Steven C. Roberts, The Roberts Companies is regarded as one of the top African American owned businesses in the United States. The Roberts Companies is a multi-faceted business organization comprised of an aviation company, television broadcasting properties, the eighth largest broadcast tower company in the United States, a wireless communications company, real estate development entities, a nationally renowned construction management and consulting firm, and most recently Roberts Hotels, LLC, which will serve as the managing member of Roberts Mayfair Hotel, LLC.
