Hotel owners, staff and visitors came together for an old-fashioned, campaign rally to "Get Out the Vote", May 5, in the hotel's beautiful Grand Hall. The majestic lobby, featuring soaring arched windows, was decorated with red, white and blue balloons and many guests wore straw hats reminiscent of the political rallies held in the forties.
An historical overview of St. Louis unfolded through a high-definition projection on the Grand Hall's 65-foot tall ceiling. Scenes from the 1904 World's Fair were splashed across the entire space, followed by scenes from the historical days when trains roared into the Romanesque-style station bringing millions of visitors and soldiers to St. Louis.
In an interview following the show, Tim Cooper, general manager, St. Louis Union Station, noted that this historical hotel was special not only because it is 121 years old.
"It's an icon of St. Louis," stated Cooper, looking across the Grand Hall at the beautiful stained glass windows. "It was the single largest train station in the world at one point. Millions of people who have traveled through here know us and have visited here."
When asked if all the negative national news on the St. Louis region has had a negative impact on the hospitality industry, Cooper was hesitant to respond. "I think if we go back over the last eleven years and look at today, St. Louis has come a long, long way. It's going to take community and businesses working together and helping each other to create that spirit of St. Louis the way it should be," he said.
Residents and visitors can enjoy the Grand Hall Experience, a 3D entertainment made up of 30 vignettes, on the hour every evening between 5pm and 10pm. For more information, call 314-621-5262 or visit St. Louis Union Station Hotel
