Hospitality Industry Presses Congress for 'Comprehensive' Immigration Reform
WASHINGTON, DC, (PRNewswire), April 16, 2006 - Calling for "good, comprehensive immigration reform," J.W. "Bill" Marriott, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Marriott International, Inc., said he hopes Congress "works out their differences," to do "what is right for our industry, our economy and our nation of immigrants."
Speaking at a global tourism and travel conference in Washington, DC, Marriott rhetorically asked, "Do you industry executives think of yourselves as felons?" He continued, "We need to stand together to include everyone in our very diverse work force. It is the diversity of our workforce that makes us great, yet some in Congress want to criminalize the undocumented and their employers."
Marriott said that the U.S. faces "long-term labor shortages, especially at the entry level," and that hospitality industry employment was a "near- record highs." He said the industry needed workers from other nations to fill necessary jobs.
While developed nations worldwide are facing cultural and economic challenges fostered by immigration, providing opportunities was critical, said Mr. Marriott. "Every country will want to regulate immigration for the sake of its security and citizens, but we must pursue policies that allow people to seek the chance to build better lives for themselves and their families," he said.
Marriott also reiterated his call for policies allowing freer travel to the U.S., saying that difficulty obtaining U.S. visas was preventing millions of visitors from contributing to the U.S. economy. "Last year, 30 million Chinese traveled abroad. They flocked to France, Germany Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macao. But only 200,000 of that 30 million -- came to the U.S.," he said.
Marriott hailed the burgeoning travel and tourism industry, citing increasing wealth worldwide, particularly in China, India, Russia and Eastern Europe. He also noted that in the U.S. baby boomers were retiring with plenty of disposable income and that Generations X and Y behind them loved to travel. He said that while encouraging this active growth the industry needed to remain a "positive force for good" focused on protecting the environment and working with governments and international agencies to prevent human trafficking.
AAA Adds More Restaurants Than Lodgings to Five Diamond Award List
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), April 16, 2006 - For the first time since 2001, AAA has added more restaurants than lodgings to its list of Five Diamond Award winners. The 2006 list includes seven additional restaurants and six more lodgings, bringing the total number of Five Diamond properties to 150.
The 2006 list also includes two new properties each in Florida and California, the only states to add more than one Five Diamond property to the list. AAA rates nearly 57,000 restaurants and lodgings throughout all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, providing the broadest coverage of any U.S. rating system, both geographically and by number of properties rated.
New to the list in 2006 are The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota and The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne, both in Florida. California added a new restaurant, The French Laundry in Yountville, and a new hotel, the Four Seasons Biltmore Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara.
"Not since 2001 have new restaurants outnumbered new lodgings earning the Five Diamond distinction," said Michael Petrone, director, AAA Tourism Information Development and head of the AAA Diamond Ratings®. "To their great credit, these establishments have distinguished themselves from the rest by providing a cutting edge culinary experience."
"Not surprisingly, the greatest numbers of Five Diamond restaurants are in areas of high tourism. As a nation, we are becoming more enlightened diners. Consumer demand is resulting in an emerging trend for more high quality dining experiences in our travel and vacations," said Petrone.
Other notable facts about the 2006 list include:
- Only 0.26 percent (about one-quarter of one percent) of all rated properties attained the exclusive Five Diamond level, AAAÕs highest rating.
- Only three properties have kept their Five Diamond ratings for 30 years: The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, Colo.; The Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.; and Camelback Inn, Scottsdale, Ariz.
- The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch is the first new Five Diamond in Colorado since The Little Nell was added 15 years ago.
- Florida has more Five Diamond restaurants than any other state (six).
- New York City and Chicago tie for the most Five Diamond restaurants in any city (five each).
- California leads the list with the most Five Diamond lodgings (15) followed by Florida with nine.
To be considered for AAA rating and approval, restaurants and lodgings must undergo a thorough inspection by one of AAA's 65 full-time, trained, professional evaluators. Five Diamond establishments go through more extensive inspections and final committee review.
