Drury Plaza Hotel Designated As An Official Site On Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail
ST. LOUIS, MO (SLFP.com), February 4, 2004 - The diorama, "Scenes of Visionary Enchantment" at the Drury Plaza Hotel, located at 4th & Market Streets in downtown St. Louis, was recently designated as an Official Site on the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail.
Drury Plaza owners, Charles and Shirley Drury, were presented with a plaque from Dick Williams of the National Parks Service certifying the hotel's diorama as a historical marker on the official Lewis & Clark Trail.
The impressive, museum-quality diorama of a Montana landscape depicts a
part of the Lewis and Clark trail that has remained largely unchanged
geographically in the last two hundred years. Life-size bronze sculptures
of members of this famous expedition include Meriwether Lewis, William
Clark, the dog, Seaman and Sacagawea, carrying her child, Jean Baptiste
Charbonneau, in a cradle board on her back, and York, the only African
American on the journey and the property of Clark.
The bronzes are permanently installed on rocks at the base of a waterfall. The lighting has been adjusted to go through a computer-controlled timed cycle,
starting with a blue sky that will change to a sunset and then to a night
sky with glowing stars. The diorama was a collaboration between sculptor
Harry Weber; designer of the rock formations and waterfall Todd Rundquist;
and muralist Peter Engelsmann.
There are only 89 officially certified sites on the Lewis & Clark National
Historic Trail. Drury Plaza Hotel is very honored to have its diorama,
"Scenes of Visionary Enchantment", receive this designation and to be able
to depict a part of this important journey of westward expansion.
The International Fur Exchange Building, the Thomas Jefferson Building and
the American Zinc Building make up the 370-room Drury Plaza Hotel, and are
listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Through careful
renovation, the expansive lobby and front desk areas of imported Italian
marble and granite utilize many features of the original Fur Exchange
building reflecting period architecture. Historic elegance is built into
every feature of the Drury Plaza Hotel, blending the memories of the past
with the present.
