Traveler Concerns Create Large Drop in U.S. Lodging Occupancy
NEW YORK, N.Y., (BUSINESS WIRE), January 11, 2004 - Security concerns faced by travelers since Sunday, December 21, 2003 when the Department of Homeland Security raised its threat advisory level to High Condition (orange), are having a negative effect on U.S. lodging occupancy, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers analysis.

Current traveler concerns account for a 1 to 1.5 percent drop in U.S. lodging occupancy for December 21 to December 27.

In a statement, Bjorn Hanson, Ph.D., global industry leader, PricewaterhouseCoopers Hospitality & Leisure Practice, said "Analysis of daily lodging occupancy since 2001 shows that travelers are extremely sensitive to real and perceived safety concerns. There have been 11 federally issued terrorist/security alerts since September 2001, six of which correspond to a statistically significant decline in U.S. lodging occupancy."

PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates that numerous flight cancellations (more than 20), flight delays and air traffic prohibitions over cities in the past 16 days, as well as visible security measures including placement of armed law enforcement on board planes, F-16 escorts on incoming international flights, FBI requests for information from hotel operators and airlines in Las Vegas, new entry procedures for foreign visitors, and the crash of a flight from Egypt to France have caused a significant rise in traveler concerns.

World's Tallest Observation Wheel World's Tallest Observation Wheel to Be Built in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, MO, (PRNewswire) January 4, 2004 - The Rio has begun negotiations with Voyager Entertainment International to build "The World's Tallest Observation Wheel."

The 600-foot structure will feature 30 "Orbitor" cabins and a 20,000 square foot nightclub. It will be positioned on the Southeast side of the Rio parking lot, visible from the Las Vegas Strip. This larger-than-life spectacle, similar to the world-famous London Eye, is anticipated to pique the interest of tourists and locals alike.

"The observation wheel has enormous potential to boost tourism in Las Vegas," said Tom Jenkin, President of Harrah's Western Division. "Because the wheel will be situated off-Strip, there will be an unparalleled panoramic view of the city in a private, luxurious environment ... this will be a one-of-a- kind experience."

Each luxury cabin will accommodate at least 20 passengers; and each Orbitor will contain its own restrooms and fully-stocked bar and galley. One full wheel rotation lasts approximately 27 minutes, and the hours of operation are slated to be 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. The wheel may occupy 22,200 daily passengers at maximum capacity.

A site integration plan is currently under development, and the project plans to break ground during the first quarter, 2004, with an estimated opening date of July, 2005.
