Welcome to St. Louis

St. Louis was founded in 1764 by Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau as fur trading post on the west banks of the Mississippi River. Today, Laclede's Landing, a nine - block industrial area that once housed companies producing coffee, leather goods, mattresses, tobacco, whiskey, candy and machinery for the barges, features some of the most unique restaurants, sidewalk cafes and clubs.

Although, St. Louis was named after the Crusader King Louis IX of France, it is often referred to as the Gateway to the West, after the Gateway Arch was built in 1965.

St. Louis has three professional sports teams that play in downtown St. Louis: St. Louis Cardinals Baseball at Busch Stadium; St. Louis Blues Hockey team at the Scottrade Center; and, the St. Louis Rams Football team at the Edward Jones Dome.

Forest Park:
In 1904, St. Louis hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics at Forest Park, adjoining the Central West End. Following the World's Fair, Forest Park became known as the 'Crown Jewel of St. Louis.' The park features: Saint Louis ZOO; Saint Louis Art Museum; The Muny; Saint Louis Science Center; Missouri History Museum; and, Jewel Box.

Visitors to St. Louis can enjoy a variety of attractions including: Union Station, Peabody Opera House, Citygarden, City Museum and Historical Old Courthouse in downtown St. Louis; Missouri Botanical Garden near Tower Grove Park; Delmar Loop in University City; Grant's Farm, in South County, Butterfly House, in West County; Six Flags, near Eureka; and Daniel Boone Home near Defiance, Missouri.

Throughout the year, a host of major events take place in St. Louis including: Fair Saint Louis, Great Forest Park Balloon Glow and Great Forest Park Balloon Race in Forest Park; St. Patrick's Day Parade in downtown St. Louis and Dogtown; Mardi Gras Parade in Soulard; boat racing on Creve Coeur Lake near West Port Plaza; summer concerts at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre; the Festival of the Little Hills and Oktoberfest in Historical St. Charles, MO.

Fabulous Fox Theatre St. Louis is home to several major corporations including Express Scripts, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Monsanto, Anheuser-Busch, and Sigma-Aldrich, as well as a growing tech and bioscience research community in the new Cortex District near Grand Center and the Fabulous Fox Theatre.

Visitors coming into Lambert-St. Louis International Airport can catch shuttles to nearby hotels or ride the MetroLink mass transit system to reach Forest Park and Downtown St. Louis.
